Slay the Spire 2 has been raking in the dough and enjoying positive feedback, but the developer's first balance pass provoked a wave of negative Steam reviews as players reacted to the changes.

A card called Prepared, which cost zero energy and let you discard one card to draw another, was altered in a beta branch and renamed Prepare. The new version costs one energy, discards two cards and grants two energy on the next turn — a significant change and a nerf to a useful card. There is some region-specific nuance to the review response: many of the negative reviews were in Simplified Chinese, and Steam users in China don't have access to certain features where they'd normally be able to leave feedback.

Mega Crit responded on X on March 20, noting that many players are new to Early Access and explaining their patching methodology. "This beta balance pass was the first of many to come over the next 1-2 years … this progress will not be linear, and no change is necessarily permanent," the post said.
