On Feb. 27, during the 30th‑anniversary Pokémon Presents stream, Game Freak revealed a new Mega Evolution for Pokémon Legends: Z‑A: Mega Garchomp Z. Mega Evolutions were introduced in 2013 with Pokémon X and Y; certain Pokémon can hold a corresponding key item to evolve in battle beyond their typical final‑stage evolution, taking on a new look and receiving a significant boost to base stats—typically around 100 points.

The mechanic skipped a few games but returned for Legends: Z‑A, and as of this writing around 90 Pokémon can Mega Evolve, with some like Charizard and Tastugiri having multiple forms. Pokémon battles have long revolved around an expanded Rock‑Paper‑Scissors system: 18 types, each with strengths and weaknesses.

Knowing an opponent’s type remains central to deciding whether to attack or swap out. Mega Evolution undercuts that strategy by turning many encounters into a numbers game; its stat boosts often remove the need to consider type matchups when Pokémon are at similar levels.
