Thomas Markle Sr. is preparing to live with a prosthetic leg after a recent amputation, his son Thomas Markle Jr. said. The 81-year-old is “going through therapy” and “physical rehab” in the Philippines, and Thomas Jr. said fitting him for a prosthetic and getting him walking again is their “goal” and “priority.” In early December he was admitted to intensive care following emergency surgery.

Thomas Jr. said his father became sick at home, that scans showed his life was “in imminent danger,” and that they were taken by ambulance to a larger hospital in the city. On Dec. 5 the retired lighting director underwent a three-hour operation to have his left leg amputated below the knee after a blood clot cut off circulation.

“My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly,” Thomas Jr. said, adding there was “no option” but to amputate in what became “a case of life or death.” Despite their estrangement, Meghan quickly reached out to her father after the procedure.
