Met Office issues snow and ice warnings as Storm Goretti approaches UK
The Met Office has issued fresh weather warnings as Storm Goretti is set to bring heavy snow to the UK later in the week, Independent.co reports. Storm Goretti, named by France’s Meteo‑France and described as the first storm of the year, is likely to cause difficult travel conditions in Britain though France will be more severely affected.
An amber warning for heavy snow covers north‑east and northern Scotland from 11am until 7pm, and a yellow warning for snow has been issued for Wales, the south‑east and west of England and the Midlands from 6pm on Thursday until midday on Friday. The Met Office said 5 to 10cm of snow may settle in some areas, with up to 20cm possible over higher ground, and a yellow wind warning is in place for the south‑west from 3pm until midnight.
Ice warnings are also active: a yellow ice warning for Northern Ireland runs until 11am on Wednesday, and a wider yellow ice warning covers the rest of the UK from midnight until 10am. The UK Health Security Agency has extended amber cold health alerts for all of England until 10am on Friday and urged people to check on those most vulnerable.
