Meta Shuts Down Horizon Worlds on Quest Headsets
Meta will shut down its Horizon Worlds metaverse for virtual reality users on June 15, removing the ability to build, publish, update VR worlds or access the platform on Meta Quest headsets. The company is shifting the product to a mobile-only experience. Horizon Worlds launched in late 2021 as a VR-only online multiplayer platform where users could build and publish virtual environments and interact as avatars.
Meta began experimenting with a mobile version in 2025, and Samantha Ryan, VP of content at Reality Labs, said in February the plan is to make Worlds almost exclusively mobile. Reality Labs posted a record $6 billion loss for the fourth quarter of 2025, bringing cumulative losses since 2020 to almost $80 billion.
In January, Meta cut 1,000 Reality Labs jobs and closed some virtual-reality game and content studios. Reality Labs CTO Andrew Bosworth said the division would prioritize mobile experiences over fully immersive headset worlds.
