Meta's new FrameSync feature aims to make VR a little less nauseating
Meta is rolling out a new frame timing technique for Horizon OS called FrameSync. It's billed as helping to reduce stale frames and increasing responsiveness in VR, all in the name of a smoother visual experience. Meta says FrameSync brings three main benefits versus the existing method, PhaseSync: more consistent smoothness (and often higher fps) by stabilizing frame pacing; fewer stale frames, especially long streaks; and lower motion-to-photon latency through better prediction to make interactions feel more immediate and responsive.
FrameSync will become the default option for all apps on the Horizon Store with v203, with developers able to experiment with v201 beforehand or opt out to stick with PhaseSync. PhaseSync delays rendering a frame until the compositor needs it, reducing latency between when the GPU presents a frame to composite, but it can struggle when an app is demanding or frame rates are lower, which can cause more stale frames.
