Method dressing: nine actors who stayed in character on the red carpet
“Have you ever heard of a female actor that was method?” Kristen Stewart asked last year, the question suggesting method acting is often framed as a male preserve. A more widely available option is “method dressing”: promoting a film in an outfit inspired by a character.
Lately it’s everywhere — a low‑stakes way to endorse a film, generate TikTok chatter and give fans a wink; some looks even hide sartorial Easter eggs only hardcore followers spot. Margot Robbie has made method dressing her signature, most recently with a high gothic Wuthering Heights “tour‑drobe” that leans on a close reading of the 1847 novel.
Her choices have included lots of red, a snakeskin motif referencing Heathcliff’s line “I’d rather be hugged by a snake”, an Elizabeth Taylor heart‑shaped Taj Mahal necklace and, at the London premiere, a Dilara Findikoglu dress fashioned from (fake) hair alongside a replica of Charlotte Brontë’s amethyst mourning bracelet incorporating the real hair of Emily and Anne.
