It’s only March, but we already have a strong contender for no-nonsense action thriller of the year. Led by rising action star Bren Foster, the movie is made up of all manner of beloved genre tropes as an underestimated man is forced to wage war on the criminals and murderers that come to his door.

The first reviews for the action thriller have now emerged, heaping praise on Foster and this twist on a Rambo-esque tale. With extra martial arts. Australian actor and martial artist Bren Foster broke onto the action scene in 2024’s Life After Fighting, which was hailed at the time as one of the best and most underrated action movies in years.

Mexicali follows Foster as a former soldier-turned-fighter-turned-farmer who finds himself the target of the Cartel. The film marks the feature directorial debut of renowned stunt performer Luke LaFontaine, and early reactions have praised his throwback approach.
