Mexican security officials said they located Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader known as El Mencho, after tracking a man close to one of his romantic partners to a cabin in the wooded mountains of Jalisco. A planned operation to capture him turned into a violent confrontation; authorities said El Mencho was fatally wounded and died while being transported to a medical facility.

Defense Secretary Gen. Ricardo Trevilla Trejo described the raid in detail, saying special forces found a cache of weapons and that forces and cartel operatives exchanged heavy fire. Officials said the operation damaged a military helicopter and that eight suspected cartel members were killed in the initial clashes; nationwide unrest that followed included retaliatory attacks in 20 of Mexico’s 32 states and at least 62 people killed.

The government reported arrests and casualties across the country, saying 70 people were detained, 34 suspected cartel members were killed and 25 national guard members died amid the violence.
