Mexico tracks El Mencho through partner; cartel boss killed
Mexican authorities say they tracked and killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, after following a romantic partner to his safe house near a mountain town. Defence secretary Ricardo Trevilla Trejo provided details of the operation that ended the life of the 59-year-old leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, noting the raid was supported by intelligence from Washington.
Trevilla said El Mencho’s bodyguards opened fire as the military encircled a cabin outside Tapalpa, forcing a helicopter into an emergency landing in an echo of a failed 2015 capture attempt. Fighting continued as he fled into a nearby forest, where he was wounded, captured and later died while being transferred for medical treatment in Mexico City.
Seven of his men were killed, two soldiers were wounded, and rifles and grenade launchers were seized; Hugo César Macías Ureña, alias “El Tuli”, who coordinated the post-raid violence, was also killed.
