Mia Amor Mottley on course for third term as Barbados votes
Barbados prime minister Mia Amor Mottley appears set for a third consecutive term as voters head to the polls. She is the country’s first female leader since independence in 1966 and has built a strong international profile through climate advocacy and support for small and vulnerable nations.
A recent nationwide poll commissioned by the Nation and Starcom found nearly 80% of decided voters would back Mottley’s Barbados Labour party, with 61.2% of respondents favouring Mottley personally and 18% favouring opposition leader Ralph Thorne. Only about 10% said they would consider voting outside the two main parties, and the survey also showed nearly half of those interviewed were undecided or said they would not vote.
Voters cite a high cost of living and crime as top concerns. The Democratic Labour party has accused the government of broken promises and pledged to prioritise crime reduction, reduce taxes and improve affordability.
