Goal reports Michael Carrick has been officially appointed caretaker head coach of Manchester United until the end of the 2025/26 season after the club decided not to bring back Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Ruben Amorim’s sacking last week.

The club’s statement noted Carrick played 464 games for United and joined the first-team coaching staff when he retired in 2018, serving under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer. United sources said they did not want to change head coaches mid-season but felt results and Amorim’s behaviour required immediate action. Director of football Jason Wilcox began the interim appointment process after a heated row with Amorim three days before the sacking, and United also spoke to Solskjaer and Ruud van Nistelrooy before Carrick was chosen unanimously by the directors.

Carrick will be supported by Steve Holland and Jonathan Woodgate, with Jonny Evans, Travis Binnion and Craig Mawson also assisting; Darren Fletcher returns to his under-18 coaching role after briefly managing the first team. Carrick faces Manchester City on Saturday in his first game, followed by a visit to Arsenal, and will be boosted by the return of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo after their nations were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations, while Noussair Mazraoui remains at the tournament with hosts Morocco.
