Independent.co reports Michigan parents Kara Vogel and Carson Howatt of Chelsea say insurer Geico refused to cover damage from a crash on Christmas Eve last month because their 1½-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son were not listed on their policy.

Howatt told local news no one was injured in the minor crash. Vogel told Click On Detroit the collision happened when another driver failed to yield at a roundabout and hit the front of their car; the family said repairs could cost between $5,000 and $15,000. They have used Geico since buying the car six months ago, before their son was born.

Howatt said he was asked whether the children were his and lived with him and later admitted signing a form stating only he and his wife were household residents. Geico told Click On Detroit that "all household residents must be listed on the auto policy, regardless of age," citing Michigan law, and the state reformed no-fault insurance in 2019. The issue was eventually resolved and the family said they will not have to pay out of pocket, though Geico told them they would need to add the children to their policy.
