Pcgamer reports Micron has signed a letter of intent to acquire Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation’s (PSMC) Tongluo chip foundry in Taiwan for $1.8 billion. The company’s statement to investors says the purchase includes an existing 300 mm wafer cleanroom measuring 300,000 square feet, but does not include the production equipment inside.

Micron said the deal covers more than facilities and aims to establish a long-term business relationship with PSMC; because the acquisition excludes manufacturing hardware, Micron will launch a multi‑phase plan to deploy both new and existing chip manufacturing technology. The Tongluo fab sits close to Micron’s Taichung site, and the company hopes the move will aid "Micron’s post-wafer assembly processing and to support PSMC in its legacy DRAM portfolio." TrendForce noted Micron has recently acquired several other fabs, and the company also plans to repurpose some NAND flash facilities in Singapore toward DRAM metallization.

The report also notes the recent closure of sub‑brand Crucial, which reduced Micron’s presence in the consumer space.
