Seven Years Later, Midway Finds Streaming Success
The World War II epic Midway, released in 2019, recounts the Battle of Midway through the pilots in the air and the planners behind the scenes. The film features a star-studded ensemble led by Ed Skrein, Woody Harrelson, Patrick Wilson, Dennis Quaid, Luke Evans and Aaron Eckhart.
Midway grossed $127 million worldwide against a $100 million budget and earned a 42% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, while landing a 92% Verified Hot rating on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. Released November 8, 2019, the 138-minute film was directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Wes Tooke.
After flopping at the box office, Midway found new life streaming for free on Tubi at the end of last month. It has since left that platform and is now available to watch exclusively on Prime Video. The movie’s financial shortfall reflected theatrical economics: it needed more than $200 million to break even, studios typically split ticket sales about 50/50 with theaters, and Lionsgate received roughly $63 million from ticket sales alone, not counting marketing.
