Mike Flanagan delivered five consecutive horror series for Netflix, a rare run of hits. He had been better known as a film director beforehand, with work such as Absentia and Gerald's Game, and has frequently written, directed, and edited his own projects. The sequence began with The Haunting of Hill House, a denser take on Shirley Jackson’s novel inspired by Robert Wise, followed by The Haunting of Bly Manor.

He then made Midnight Mass, which he wrote and directed in full and described as "deeply personal," addressing his Catholic upbringing, eventual atheism, and sobriety. Midnight Club followed, a story about eight terminally ill young adults whose premiere set a Guinness World Record with 21 jump scares, and Flanagan concluded the run with the gothic The Fall of the House of Usher.

Part of the streak came from a long-term Netflix arrangement that ended in 2022. After that he moved his Intrepid Pictures to Amazon Studios to produce new content for Prime Video.
