Mike Flanagan's Three Underrated Movies Were All Released 10 Years Ago
Mike Flanagan has become known for television work such as Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House and The Fall of the House of Usher, and for Stephen King film adaptations including Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep and The Life of Chuck. He is currently working on a reboot of The Exorcist, a streaming series adaptation of Carrie, and plans for a Dark Tower series are in development.
Ten years ago his career received a boost when three films arrived in the same year, each showcasing his command of character and tension. He understands horror craft, builds slow, tense scenes that can cut loose, and even uses silence to immerse the audience; his verbose dialogue can rival that of often-cited wordsmiths like Quentin Tarantino.
Before I Wake was filmed in 2013, picked up by Relativity Media in 2014 and finished by 2015, only to be delayed when the studio filed for bankruptcy; it saw a global release in 2016 but did not debut in the United States until Netflix premiered it in January 2018.
