Mike McCarthy hired as Pittsburgh Steelers head coach
The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached an agreement to hire Mike McCarthy as their next coach, the team announced, Cbssports reported. McCarthy, a 62-year-old Pittsburgh native, took the 2025 season off after five seasons as the Dallas Cowboys' coach and previously spent 13 years as the Green Bay Packers' coach, a run highlighted by Green Bay's victory over the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
In 18 seasons as a head coach he has a 174-112-2 regular-season record and an 11-11 postseason mark, with 12 playoff appearances including eight straight from 2009–16. A former offensive coordinator, McCarthy helped develop Aaron Rodgers and Dak Prescott; Rodgers won a Super Bowl MVP and two league MVPs with McCarthy, and Prescott led the NFL with 36 touchdown passes in 2023.
McCarthy will succeed Mike Tomlin, who stepped down a day after Pittsburgh's loss to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild card round; Tomlin spent 19 years as coach in Pittsburgh, won a Super Bowl, coached in another, took the team to the playoffs 13 times and never had a losing season.
