Only days into his third term as mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey stepped to a microphone hours after an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good on the city’s south side and forcefully rejected the federal self‑defense claim, calling it “bullshit,” telling ICE to “get the fuck out of Minneapolis,” and urging residents to remain peaceful to avoid a possible federal military response.

Federal officials defended the shooting, and a senior federal law enforcement official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the mayor’s fiery remarks prompted state agents to be removed from the investigation. On social media, the Trump administration labeled Mr. Frey a “scumbag” who “should be ashamed of himself,” and White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson called him “a disgrace” who had “rushed to publicly lie and incite more violence against law enforcement.” The Department of Homeland Security later criticized Mr.

Frey and Gov. Tim Walz for policies that limit local cooperation with immigration agents, saying illegal immigrants convicted of crimes “should not be released back onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans.” Inside Minneapolis, Democrats have largely united in criticizing the ICE deployment, and Mr.

Frey’s remarks won praise from some corners even as others remained skeptical.
