Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, a 1988 anime film and the franchise’s first original theatrical outing, plunges into an ongoing intergalactic conflict that escalates into a genocidal war. It is not the best entry point for newcomers, but a special double feature pairing Char’s Counterattack with The Sorcery of Nymph Circe — the second film in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway trilogy — will screen at select theaters in Japan for a limited time later this month.

The wider Gundam saga began with Mobile Suit Gundam and continued through Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, all centered on the One Year War: the Principality of Zeon, a cluster of Space Colonies, repeatedly clashes with the Earth Federation over Earth’s resource crisis.
