ZDNET reviewer praises Modicia OS as a multimedia-focused Linux distro
ZDNET writer Jack Wallen says Modicia OS is a strong Linux distribution for creators, noting it has been around since 1998 and is built on Debian with a focus on audio, video and image production tools. Wallen highlights a range of performance optimizations included in Modicia: Turbo Boost enabled by default; tuned swappiness (60% for multitasking, 10% for audio/video) claimed to improve performance (+25%) and SSD lifespan; added RAM compression (ZRAM) said to deliver +20% I/O speed; Jack Audio and Rsync preconfigured; a real‑time kernel with elevated process priority for low latency; and integrated plugins/codecs and advanced power/fan management.
The Pro version adds a more aggressively compiled kernel and other build optimizations and costs 19.90 EUR, the article says. The distribution ships with many creative apps, with examples given including AI Copilot, Ardour, Audacity, Kdenlive, OBS Studio, GIMP, Inkscape and Natron.
Wallen describes Modicia’s customized Cinnamon desktop as looking unlike stock Cinnamon—more like a heavily tweaked KDE or GNOME—with an app launcher resembling the GNOME Application Overview and a top‑left app menu. Wallen notes some limits and odd choices: DaVinci Resolve did not run in his test VM due to the lack of an Nvidia GPU, and he says Resolve should run with the right GPU; the inclusion of LAN Share is criticised as out of date (last release 2017) in lieu of alternatives such as Warpinator or Nitroshare.
