Dallas police say a 28-year-old woman died after being shot during an argument at a home in the 800 block of Green Cove Lane on Feb. 2. Officers responded to a call at about 3:55 p.m., the department said. Officers found Tabatha Jones in a bedroom after she made a 911 call; she alleged her mother shot her in the side.

Jones was transported to the hospital, where she died nearly an hour later, police said. Her mother, 49-year-old Shanika Battle, was arrested at the scene and has been charged with murder, according to an arrest affidavit and online records reviewed by PEOPLE. After a search warrant, officers allegedly found a .380-caliber pistol in the living room next to Battle's purse and a matching bullet casing near Jones' room.

According to the affidavit, Battle told investigators the pair argued after Jones took alcohol that belonged to her, that the dispute remained verbal, and that she had taken a gun from her purse to 'scare' Jones; Battle denied shooting her daughter.
