Playing Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflections feels like playing a PlayStation 2 game — not as a criticism but as praise for a spirit we see less often now. The game recalls an era of mid-tier experiments and creative risk-taking alongside the staples of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, offering something closer to Radiata Stories or Rogue Galaxy than to modern, nostalgia-driven releases.

At its core, Stories 3 is a turn-based RPG about collecting Monsties and serving as a ranger and ruler in Azuria. A disaster called the Encroachment spreads across the land, driving monsters into feral frenzies and destroying habitats. Capcom reframes the rider–monster relationship around conservation: hatching eggs in safe areas, re-releasing monsters when habitats recover, and addressing human causes such as conflict and resource hoarding.

The game’s craft lifts these ideas above their familiar trappings. Voice acting and visual direction impress, egg collecting feels more purposeful, and armor grinding is more enjoyable.
