More than half of teenagers in the United States have used artificial intelligence chatbots to help with schoolwork, a new Pew Research Center study finds. Fifty-four percent of teens aged 13 to 17 reported using tools like ChatGPT or Microsoft’s Copilot for tasks such as researching assignments or solving math problems.

The survey of 1,458 teenagers and their parents, conducted last fall, showed wide variation in how teens rely on A.I.: 44 percent said they used it for “some” or “a little” schoolwork, while 10 percent said they turned to chatbots for help with all or most of their assignments.

In an earlier Pew study, 26 percent of teens said they had used ChatGPT for schoolwork in 2024, up from 13 percent in 2023. Teens use chatbots for a range of purposes beyond homework. Forty-seven percent said they had used chatbots for fun, 42 percent to summarize content and 12 percent for advice or emotional support.
