The mother of a student critically wounded in last month’s mass shooting in British Columbia has sued OpenAI, alleging the company failed to alert police about disturbing material tied to the shooter’s ChatGPT account. The lawsuit, filed by Cia Edmonds on behalf of her daughter Maya Gebala, says Ms.

Gebala was shot three times at close range while trying to lock a library door to protect classmates and remains hospitalized in Vancouver after multiple brain surgeries. On Feb. 10, Jesse Van Rootselaar, 18, took two firearms from her home in Tumbler Ridge, killed her mother and 11-year-old brother, and then traveled to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where she killed five students and one educator and shot two other students.

Ms. Van Rootselaar died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Eight months before the attack, OpenAI suspended a ChatGPT account associated with Ms. Van Rootselaar, and the family’s suit alleges the company was aware of the shooter’s violent intentions and use of the chatbot to plan scenarios involving gun violence.
