Mourinho's first season back at Benfica called 'complete disaster'
Alvaro Magalhaes said Jose Mourinho's highly anticipated return to Benfica has “turned into a nightmare,” calling the campaign a “complete disaster” as the Eagles fall behind in the Liga Portugal title race. Benfica have already been eliminated from the Champions League, the Taça de Portugal and the Taça da Liga.
The criticism intensified after a 2-2 draw with rivals FC Porto in which Mourinho was sent off. Magalhaes argued Benfica conceded too much space, saying: “They were far superior in midfield. Porto were much better and could have scored more than two goals.” He also questioned Mourinho’s substitutions, adding they were “very late” and that changes in midfield were expected at halftime.
Despite significant investment in the transfer market, results have not matched expectations. “This season is not to be forgotten; it is to be analyzed,” Magalhaes said, noting his hope for the championship but calling the campaign “an unhappy season for Benfica” given the resources spent and objectives set.
