MovieWeb senior writer Philip Etemesi published a list on Jan. 31, 2026 identifying 10 Jack Reacher novels he argues Prime Video’s Reacher series should skip. The piece notes the Amazon show adapts Lee Child’s books one-per-season and so far has covered Killing Floor, Persuader and Bad Luck Tomorrow; star Alan Ritchson confirmed Season 4 will be based on Gone Tomorrow.

Etemesi’s central point is practical: Child has written 30 Reacher books, and the series is unlikely to run 20+ seasons “like Law & Order and The Simpsons,” so producers will need to ignore weaker entries. The list ranks Never Go Back as the top book to skip, calling it too formulaic and noting it was already adapted into a poorly reviewed Tom Cruise movie.

Other books the list singles out as poor fits include The Secret, which is set before Reacher becomes a drifter and feels more like prequel material than something for the current series, and High Heat, a novella Etemesi says would suit a movie better. Past Tense is judged a miss whose plot would be overstretched across a full TV season, while Echo Burning reads more like an Agatha Christie–style mystery with slow pacing.

The piece also flags Personal as too Bond-like and illogical for Reacher, The Sentinel as overloaded with tech and political subplots, A Wanted Man as too car-bound and controversial in its 9/11 commentary, Blue Moon for reusing familiar mafia tropes and relying on coincidence, and Nothing to Lose for feeling too similar to First Blood.
