MTG documentary The Gathering is the Magic hits Kickstarter April 7

Filmmaker David K. Wilson planned to begin shooting a documentary about Magic: The Gathering at a Star City Games convention in Louisville in March 2020, but the pandemic pushed production back until 2022. His first major shoot was SCG Con Dallas, where players initially treated the camera crew like outsiders.

The breakthrough came when Wilson signed up for a Sealed event and sat down to play; attitudes shifted and people began approaching the crew to share their stories. That led him to orient the film around the community rather than set releases, mechanics, or history, which is why the project is called The Gathering is the Magic.

After years of filming conventions and interviewing players, judges, artists, organizers, and creators, Wilson has a roughly 75-minute cut he considers complete but still wants to add interviews and higher-end post-production.
