Naked Gun sequel put on hold after Paramount–Skydance change, Schaffer says
Collider reports that director Akiva Schaffer said there are currently no plans for a follow-up to The Naked Gun reboot and that the recent Paramount merger with Skydance has left the franchise's future uncertain; Schaffer told CBR, "We are not planning another."
The reboot, directed by Schaffer and starring Liam Neeson as Lieutenant Frank Drebin Jr., earned $102.1 million worldwide on a $42 million budget and has performed well on VOD and streaming charts. It holds an 87% critics score and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and features Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder and Kevin Durand in the cast.
Schaffer said the team is waiting to hear from the studio after the ownership change: "I don't know if you heard about Paramount kind of changed owners. It was maybe something. It was about seven days after the movie came out, and so, you know, we're waiting to hear from see if they would want it." He and writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand have ideas — "they do have a list of gags," Schaffer noted — and producer Erica Huggins added, "We have a big idea that we had talked about." The film is currently streaming on Paramount+ while any sequel decision remains pending.
