Netflix's First 10 Original Series, Ranked
Since its launch on January 16, 2007, Netflix has grown into the most-subscribed video-on-demand service, building a wide catalog of original TV content. Though the platform continues to roll out hits, looking back at its early originals shows how those programs helped shape streaming.
Richie Rich (2015) was a live-action sitcom starring Jake Brennan as a self-made child trillionaire; the series ran two seasons and 21 episodes and included an early-career appearance by Jenna Ortega. Marco Polo (2014) followed the explorer at Kublai Khan’s court, starred Lorenzo Richelmy and Benedict Wong, and featured Michelle Yeoh, Gabriel Byrne and Joan Chen.
Picked up by Netflix with a $90 million budget, Marco Polo became the world’s second-most expensive TV show; season two earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score and an Emmy nomination, but the series was canceled in 2016 after losing $200 million over two seasons.
