Netflix’s The Electric State logged 3.86B minutes to become a top-streamed film of 2025
Nielsen’s annual streaming data shows Netflix’s The Electric State, which premiered March 14, 2025, accumulated 3.86 billion minutes viewed between December 30, 2024, and December 28, 2025, placing it among 2025’s most-watched films on streaming. The result is notable given the film’s rocky launch: critics were harsh and the project was widely branded a failure when measured against its eye-popping $320 million budget.
Still, the 3.86 billion total trails other Netflix originals in 2025, including Back in Action (6 billion minutes) and Happy Gilmore 2 (7.07 billion minutes). The Electric State is an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 illustrated novel and was criticized for taking extensive liberties with its source material.
On Rotten Tomatoes the film sits at a 14% critical approval rating, with the site’s consensus saying it “lumber[ed] along like a giant automaton,” possessing “plenty of hardware,” but lacking the spark to “make it come to life.” Audiences were more forgiving: viewer ratings put the film at 67% based on feedback from more than 5,000 users, and Collider noted that word of mouth appears to have helped its performance over time.
What happens next remains unclear.
