A new Evangelion anime series has been announced and will be written by Yoko Taro, creator of the Nier franchise. The announcement was made during the franchise’s 30th anniversary event in Yokohama on Feb. 23, and Hideaki Anno will not be writing the script. Kazuya Tsurumaki, a franchise veteran who directed the Rebuild films and the recent Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime, will direct the new series.

Yoko Taro will bring composer Keiichi Okabe from the Nier franchise, and the project will be produced by Studio Khara and Cloverworks. How this new entry will connect to the rest of the franchise remains unclear. Evangelion endings—the original anime’s "beautiful, low-budget clapping scene," the "disturbing strangling" at the end of the first movies, and the "feel-good wrap-up" of the Rebirth series—don’t leave much room for sequels, which is why the franchise has relied on reboots.
