A new Neon Genesis Evangelion series was announced during the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and Yoko Taro, the director of the Nier series, will write the script. Details are scarce: nothing is known about whether the story will take place before, during, or after the original series.

The Rebuild films established multiple timelines, so this could be a retelling in an alternate universe or set after one of the many endings across the TV series, End of Evangelion, and the Rebuild films. Kazuya Tsurumaki and Toru Yatabe will direct; both have worked on Evangelion previously.

Tsurumaki is also known for FLCL and Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, while Yatabe has credits on Chainsaw Man and collaborated with Tsurumaki on GQuuuuuuX. Hideaki Anno appears not to be involved beyond his studio Khara producing the show, and given how Thrice Upon a Time concluded, handing the keys to others may be for the best.
