The new Legio Custodes for The Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40K look fantastic — head and shoulders above what came before. Their size, ornate filigree and gun spears make them unmistakably elite, but they are surprisingly fiddly to assemble. Assembly starts simply with a torso and legs in two parts, but weapons and gear complicate things.

The Guardian Spears require separate upper arms and wrists attached to fingers curled around the weapon. The shoulders are split into two pieces that can refuse to slot together neatly, and the wrists glue onto flat surfaces so they can drift until the adhesive fully cures.

The connections for the plumes and battle standards are tiny, with barely a millimetre of clearance, which makes them feel fragile and raises real concerns about transporting finished models. If you don’t already own a pinvice, it’s worth getting one for this set.
