Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Sunday that New York City public schools will be fully closed on Monday, with no remote learning. The city’s last official snow day was in March 2019. A winter storm expected to bring heavy snow and wind from Sunday night into Monday prompted the decision.

Officials had considered keeping buildings closed but teaching remotely, but because of the severe forecast and the recent midwinter recess, the city canceled classes entirely. "We do not believe providing remote instruction tomorrow would be effective," schools chancellor Kamar Samuels said.

Samuels added that many schools had not had time to send devices home for remote instruction and that the closure would help staff and families who spent the break traveling return home safely. Mayor Mamdani also announced a ban on nonessential travel on city streets until noon on Monday.
