New York City public school students will learn remotely on Monday after a winter storm dropped nearly a foot of snow, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on social media Sunday night. About half a million students are affected.

Pre-K, elementary and middle school students will have remote classes, while high schools and programs serving grades 6 through 12 will observe a previously scheduled Professional Development Day, the city said. All public after-school programs and yellow bus services are suspended on Monday.

The city’s Emergency Management office issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory through Monday and a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m., the city said. Joshua Goodman, a spokesman for the Department of Sanitation, said streets were salted and plowed and bike lanes were cleared for delivery workers on Sunday. Mr. Mamdani had said on Friday that students would not be given traditional snow days, which have nearly died out since remote learning became common during the Covid-19 pandemic.
