Newcastle were held to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona. Harvey Barnes gave the Magpies the lead in the 86th minute, only for Malick Thiaw to concede a stoppage-time penalty which Lamine Yamal converted with the final kick of the game.

The hosts started on the front foot: Sandro Tonali’s header was cleared off the line after Joan Garcia spilled a save, and Aaron Ramsdale kept Newcastle in the contest when Fermin Lopez fired straight at him. The second half followed a similar pattern as Anthony Elanga and Will Osula wasted chances after getting behind the defence, while Robert Lewandowski poked wide from a Raphinha pass.

Joelinton had a goal disallowed for offside after Barnes hit the post, but Barnes later volleyed home from Jacob Murphy’s cross. The late drama turned when Thiaw tripped Dani Olmo in the box and Yamal sent Ramsdale the wrong way from the spot. Player ratings (out of 10) included Aaron Ramsdale 6, Kieran Trippier 6, Malick Thiaw 6, Dan Burn 8 and Lewis Hall 9.
