Newly promoted Thun on the brink of a first-ever Swiss title
The small town of Thun has quietly become the centre of Swiss football. After promotion back to the Super League in 2025, the club that began the season with the second-cheapest squad is now on the verge of winning the first league title in its history. Thun last lost a match in mid-December and have won 12 of their last 13 competitive games; no team in the league has scored more or conceded fewer.
There are still three regular-season matches and five in the championship group to be played, but with eight games remaining Thun lead nearest challengers FC St. Gallen by 16 points. The country’s traditional elite have been left behind: reigning double winners FC Basel, Young Boys Bern and the two Zurich clubs are all struggling, while Grasshoppers are fighting relegation after Thun thrashed them 5-1 at the Stockhorn Arena in front of a sell-out crowd of 10,000.
Thun have never won the league and have lost two cup finals; their best finish came in 2005 when they were runners-up.
