Next Xbox (Project Helix) could cost $999–$1,200, expert says
Tech reporter Moore’s Law Is Dead—who has been ahead of most people on reporting about the next Xbox—says Project Helix could cost between $999 and $1,200. Such a price would be nonsensical for a console and might affirm the truism that an Xbox that plays PC games is just a PC.
New Xbox boss Asha Sharma confirmed the Project Helix codename and said it will "lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games." That raised questions about whether the device will be a traditional console or essentially a PC in an Xbox-shaped case. The term "hybrid console" has been used, and there are concerns that upgrades to RAM, GPU and other internals could be restricted by warranty rules and unusual screws.
Moore’s Law Is Dead frames the pricing around an estimated $900 cost to build the machine, meaning Microsoft would likely need to charge at least $1,000 to turn even a slim profit while keeping the price palatable for a Call of Duty-playing audience.
