Nicholas Brendon, who rose to fame as Xander Harris on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, died in his sleep at 54 on March 20. After the show ran from 1997 to 2003, he struggled with alcohol, legal troubles and health problems. A year after Buffy ended he entered rehab, saying, "After realizing that I had a disease that was taking control of my life, I decided that the best way for me to regain my health was to enter a treatment facility." Brendon’s legal issues stretched over more than a decade.

He faced charges including resisting arrest, battery against a police officer and vandalism, and was sentenced to community service and probation after pleading no contest. Arrests followed in Boise in 2014 for allegedly resisting officers; multiple hotel incidents in Florida in 2015 that led to criminal mischief and grand theft charges; and an October 2015 case in Saratoga Springs in which he pleaded guilty to criminal mischief after being accused of gripping a girlfriend’s throat and damaging her phone.
