Nick Reiner, the youngest son of director Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges in the killing of his parents, who were found stabbed to death inside their Los Angeles home. The brief hearing was largely procedural, and lawyers moved discussion of a defense into the future.

Mr. Reiner, 32, waived his right to a speedy trial when asked. The judge set April 29 for lawyers to attempt to schedule a preliminary hearing, though prosecutors said it could take more time while evidence is reviewed and officials await a medical examiner’s report.

He was charged in December with two counts of first-degree murder carrying "special circumstances" that could lead to life without parole or the death penalty.
