Nigeria Attack Leaves More Than 160 Dead
Nytimes reports that at least 167 people were killed by gunmen in attacks on the villages of Woro and Nuku in Kwara State, central-western Nigeria. The assaults on the rural communities are among the deadliest in recent years in a country facing widespread violence, aid workers and officials said.
Residents and aid workers said attackers stormed the villages, carried out executions and set fire to homes, shops and the palace of the emir. A Red Cross official in Kwara, Babaomo Ayodeji, said searches for bodies were ongoing and the death toll had risen to 167; a police spokeswoman said security agencies were still gathering information and many people were injured.
The chief of Woro said the village was predominantly Muslim and that about 85 to 90 percent of those buried were Muslim. No group has claimed responsibility, though analysts and residents suggested the gunmen may be members of a faction of Boko Haram.
