On a humid afternoon in Lagos, a comedy skit shoot looks more like a small film production: lighting assistants, a sound engineer, a makeup artist and a creator recording behind-the-scenes footage surround Broda Shaggi as he issues instructions, rehearses lines and performs.

Olufemi Oguntamu, chief executive of Penzaarville Africa, says: “He shoots like he’s doing a movie... people don’t understand how difficult it is to keep up creating content every day because it has to be new content.” Broda Shaggi began uploading skits at the University of Lagos and has since built a large following, released music and crossed into film and television.

He is one of many in a growing Nigerian ecosystem of skit-makers, YouTubers, TikTokers, podcasters and streamers reaching audiences across Africa and the diaspora. The 2026 Africa Creator Economy Report values the sector at $3.1bn and projects growth to $17.8bn by 2030, but more than half of Africa’s creators earn less than $100 a month.
