Night of the Living Dead remains a landmark of horror since its 1968 release. Made on a modest $114,000 budget, it went on to earn $30,000,000 and offered a rare, nonstereotypical lead in Ben, played by Duane Jones, giving the film social resonance. Guinness World Records lists pieces of the film in 129 other movies as of January 2024, with clips featured in Halloween II, Christaine F., Fade to Black, Proof and Stir of Echoes.

Those repeat appearances stemmed from a copyright error: the Walter Reade Organization changed the title from Night of the Flesh Eaters but failed to add the required copyright indicator, a necessity under the US Copyright Act of 1909, and the movie entered the public domain.

The oversight allowed filmmakers to include clips without paying the creators. While that removed a revenue stream, it has helped keep the film visible in other works and documentaries, preserving its place in horror history.
