9 Superhero Castings That Fans Initially Rejected
Superhero casting often provokes strong reactions. Sometimes the obvious choice proves perfect—David Corenswet as Superman or Ron Perlman as Hellboy—and other times initial excitement fades or critics rally against a pick. Fans have reversed their opinions on many roles, from backlash over Brie Larson to fancasting suggestions for Bryan Cranston simply because he once played an evil bald man.
Several surprising choices eventually won over audiences. Colin Farrell’s unrecognizable, makeup-heavy Penguin became a scene-stealer and led to HBO’s The Penguin; Joseph Quinn’s Johnny Storm drew loud approval after a sizzle reel and became an MCU favorite; Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle moved from mixed reaction to being the most loved aspect of The Dark Knight Rises while she also closed out the year with an acclaimed turn as Fantine.
Other recastings reshaped characters for a new generation. Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton and turned Banner into a breakout in The Avengers, going on to play the role in multiple MCU titles.
