Nintendo Switch 2 may get user-replaceable battery in EU model
Japanese publication Nikkei says Nintendo is preparing a European version of the Switch 2 with a user-replaceable battery, and that Joy-Con 2 controllers for that market will also gain replaceable batteries. Those changes are being developed so the console and controllers comply with the European Union’s Right to Repair Directive, which takes effect in July.
The law, passed by the European Parliament in April 2024, requires manufacturers to facilitate repairs and gives consumers access to spare parts, tools and repair information as part of the EU’s Green Deal to promote reuse and recycling. Nikkei adds Nintendo may take similar steps in the U.S.
or Japan if comparable laws are enacted. At present, replacing a Switch 2 console or Joy-Con 2 battery in the U.S. requires a service request to Nintendo, and it’s unclear whether the revised EU model would cost more for consumers. Nintendo already offers a Japan-only, Japanese-language version of the Switch 2 that is region-locked to the Japanese eShop.
