Nobel Institute: Peace Prize Cannot Be Transferred After Machado’s Offer to Trump
On Friday the Norwegian Nobel Institute said a Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred to another person after Venezuela opposition leader María Corina Machado offered to give her prize to President Trump. The institute wrote that the facts were "clear and well established," adding that "Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared or transferred to others." Ms.
Machado, last year’s Peace Prize winner, told Fox News she would like to give the award to Mr. Trump as an act of gratitude after the removal of Nicolás Maduro, who was captured last week by the United States. In the Fox interview Ms. Machado said, "Well, it hasn’t happened yet," and that she would "certainly would love to be able to personally tell him that we believe the Venezuelan people — because this is a prize of the Venezuelan people — certainly want to, to give it to him and share it with him." The Nobel Institute linked to a page on its website saying the Peace Prize could not be revoked and quoted the Nobel Foundation statutes that "no appeals may be made against the decision of a prize-awarding body with regard to the award of a prize." Mr.
Trump said he would meet Ms. Machado next week in Washington and called it "a great honor" to accept the award, adding that it was "a major embarrassment to Norway" that he did not win.
