The ambitious project involving former Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar at Nottingham Forest appears to be reaching a bitter conclusion. The Brazilian has been instructed to remain away from both the City Ground and the club’s training facilities as his departure from the Premier League side draws closer after a turbulent eight-month spell overseeing football operations.

His absence from the stands has become conspicuous. He missed Forest’s 2-2 draw with Manchester City, the third successive match he has missed, and those unexplained absences from the directors’ box have heightened speculation of a complete breakdown with the club hierarchy and owner Evangelos Marinakis.

Edu’s tenure, tasked with recruitment and strategy, was marked by instability. Since July the club has gone through four managers — with Sean Dyche shown the door on February 12 — and backed a £200m spending spree that has yet to yield results.
