NSW major event powers challenged as protesters seek to march on Herzog visit
Palestine Action Group Lawyers told the supreme court the New South Wales government handed police sweeping powers for the duration of Israeli president Isaac Herzog’s visit and had done so to suppress protests. The urgent hearing before Justice Robertson Wright came ahead of a planned march from Town Hall to state parliament by people opposing Herzog’s visit.
The government invoked a “major event” declaration that grants police extra powers in parts of the CBD and eastern suburbs until Thursday, including the ability to move people on, close locations, issue orders to prevent disruption and search anyone inside the area or as a condition of entry.
Penalties for failing to comply can include fines of up to $5,500. The Minns government told the court the measures were needed to secure the safety of the president and the community.
