Starfleet Academy's penultimate episode, "300th Night," reveals a synthetic variant of the Omega molecule called Omega-47 and ties back to Voyager's 1998 story "The Omega Directive." The episode shows the substance weaponized into a field of mines, turning what was once a theoretical apocalypse into an immediate danger.

Paul Giammati's villain has boxed in the Federation with active Omega mines that, if detonated or accidentally set off during disarmament, would render Warp travel impossible for light-years in every direction. Unlike the Burn, the damage an Omega chain could inflict on subspace appears essentially permanent, threatening the Prime Timeline and the franchise’s core mode of storytelling.

Even so, Star Trek might continue. Season 2 of Starfleet Academy has already wrapped, suggesting some stories could explore the aftermath.
